...when they say things like "we let them" it implies we were in on it, we were aware of the possibility of being duped, or that we were even aware of legislation that allowed it. It sounds like victim blaming. We cannot be aware of everything. In fact, our awareness is necessarily limited so that we can focus on getting through the moment at hand safely and navigating to the next moments and hours and days. So, no, we didn't "let" anyone take advantage of us. We have been victimized by the sheer volume of attacks on our attention, our pocketbooks, and our lives.
