3. Huge disappointment

I kept waiting for it to decide whether some of the strange goings-on involved the supernatural but I was never sure, even at the last episode. There was no explanation for the blackened eyes and demon voice transitions for Quincy and the townswoman. That's either supernatural or an unreliable, often drugged, character's POV. Fundamentally, I couldn't latch on to any of the main characters, who are all mostly unsympathetic, especially Gabe, though the most sympathetic are Bart and Mrs. Whitby. There are so many quirky inventions in the plot that just never get fully realized, like Gabe's get-up near the end. The ending left me feeling they probably planned to explain things in the second season, which will probably not happen. Maybe there was a consistent, organic plan to all of this, or maybe, like Lost, they are just shotgunning the quirkiness for it's own sake.
