On last question... how long do you wait until you start trying to highlight the box? I know that touch screens can be ornery sometimes when they are first activated. If waiting doesn't help, then it sounds like a possible program breakdown and yes, you may have to reinstall things to get it to work.

Make absolutely sure that you save/backup everything on it before you give it to the repair person. Yes, they are trained, but accidents happen, so better to prepare than to realize you just lost 50 years of memories or the last month of irreplaceable work efforts.
