window to type it in. Then if I restart it everything works, I type in my password, and it fires up and works
perfectly. If I put it in sleep mode it works fine but I have read it is not good to use sleep mode for long periods.
I took it to Best Buy, they want $175 up front to look at it plus parts. I didn't pay a whole lot
for the computer to put that much into fixing it when it still works. Should I buy a new one and go through all the
hassle of setting up or just keep using it the way it is? I get the feeling they will take my $175 then just click on something
in the settings and it will work.

(9,552 posts)As long as you turn it off every day, you will be fine. The main reason for that is that the computer has to restart to update some things and when you never turn it off, it cannot finish updates and therefore will not update.
Is this just from trying to use the mouse, or if you use the arrows on the keyboard to move the marker as well?

(38,654 posts)touch screen on first start up. When I hit restart, I can sign in with no problem. The mouse curser works fine but when I hit
the left button to type in the password nothing. On restart everything works normally. I am afraid at some point it won't let me
sign back in at all. I guess I will try a local computer shop.

(9,552 posts)On last question... how long do you wait until you start trying to highlight the box? I know that touch screens can be ornery sometimes when they are first activated. If waiting doesn't help, then it sounds like a possible program breakdown and yes, you may have to reinstall things to get it to work.
Make absolutely sure that you save/backup everything on it before you give it to the repair person. Yes, they are trained, but accidents happen, so better to prepare than to realize you just lost 50 years of memories or the last month of irreplaceable work efforts.
I hope it works out for you!

(5,793 posts)My old MacBook doesn't respond to let me type in password anymore unless I hit either the shut down button on top right hand of keyboard OR if I just tap the trackpad so I just tap the trackpad and then I can instantly type in password without hitting the shutoff.
