New 'Star Trek' Movie in the Works From John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein [View all]

When David Ellison took over Paramount, one key question for film observers was what would happen with Star Trek? Would the studio move forward with a number of projects it has spent years developing, or set the warp drive for uncharted territory? Could the Chris Pine crew return? What about the Duffer Bros., who are decamping to Paramount from Netflix, rebooting the franchise?

We now have an answer to some of those questions, as Paramount has tapped John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to write and direct a new Trek movie that is said to be unconnected from anything previously done. (So, no Pine crew.) They will produce via their GoldDay banner.

The duo is known for balancing comedic chops with high concepts and action, such as their beloved hit Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which Paramount released. They recently wrapped the Apple feature Mayday, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

Star Trek has not appeared on the big screen since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond underperformed with $343.4 million globally. A half dozen or so projects have been in development since, including multiple takes that would reunite the Pine-led crew, and even an R-rated, Quentin Tarantino script. But none made it over the finish line, with Trek living on in streaming via various shows on Paramount+.
