When David Ellison took over Paramount, one key question for film observers was what would happen with Star Trek? Would the studio move forward with a number of projects it has spent years developing, or set the warp drive for uncharted territory? Could the Chris Pine crew return? What about the Duffer Bros., who are decamping to Paramount from Netflix, rebooting the franchise?
We now have an answer to some of those questions, as Paramount has tapped John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to write and direct a new Trek movie that is said to be unconnected from anything previously done. (So, no Pine crew.) They will produce via their GoldDay banner.
The duo is known for balancing comedic chops with high concepts and action, such as their beloved hit Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which Paramount released. They recently wrapped the Apple feature Mayday, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.
Star Trek has not appeared on the big screen since 2016s Star Trek Beyond underperformed with $343.4 million globally. A half dozen or so projects have been in development since, including multiple takes that would reunite the Pine-led crew, and even an R-rated, Quentin Tarantino script. But none made it over the finish line, with Trek living on in streaming via various shows on Paramount+.

And, there aren't many bigger Star Trek fans than me.

Any episode where Earth and our solar system are threatened is garbage, with one exception: Star Trek IV, the Voyage Home.
Saving the whales here in the 21st century is a good plan.

Off the top of my head: Assignment Earth, The Changeling, Best of Both Worlds, Conspiracy, ST:The Motion Picture, and First Contact are examples that aren't just good Star Trek, but good Sci-Fi.

That makes the galaxy very much smaller than it is in reality.
If the Enterprise is hopping around the galaxy like airliners hop around the airports of 21st century Earth they are tourists, not explorers.

(40,196 posts)In real life I've got over a hundred Star Trek novelizations on my book shelves and a few boxes of Star Trek memorabilia in storage.
I know people who wrote some of the earliest slash, though they'd never confess it today. In the Eternal September of the internet I was fascinated to see multiple people claiming authorship of slash that I'd seen being written.
Nevertheless I'm disappointed with a lot of the newer Paramount product. I want interesting stories, not product. Creating interesting stories shouldn't be too difficult when you've got an entire galaxy as your playground.

(1,397 posts)ready for Sci-Fi ... and Spock started singing. And soon they were all singing and dancing. It was the lowest point ever in Star Trek. It actually ruined my night.
When SNW is good, it's among the best. But, they know how to be bad.
Discovery sucked starting with season 3. It was tedious at points. I barely made it.
Lower Decks was surprisingly excellent and thoroughly entertaining. Killed off for no good reason.
Trek is at its best when it exposes and comments on the present human condition as seen in other worldly contexts. It's at its worst when Spock takes dancing lessons. There's only 16 more episodes, and they will waste a lot of time with Spock's love life.
I vaguely remember slash. That was pre-internet fan-fiction, yes? People had some weird ideas that Kirk and Spock were lovers. Perhaps it was one of those parallel universes. There are so many.

(13,825 posts)That statement wouldn't be so ominous if the writers/directors had some track record of working on another ST series or movie.
Also, I don't think leaning into the comedic and action aspects of the Star Trek universe is an especially wise decision at this point in world events.
Sounds like it will be Star Trek in name only.

So, these guys made that Dungeons and Dragons movie, which was surprisingly excellent and fun. There's some potential.
The last ST movie was brought to us by the people who do the Fast and Furious movies, and the last ST movie was pretty good.
