I take the filter, look it over, bend over and tap it on the ground, maybe some dirt comes out but not much, hand it back and say, I'll blow it out with my air hose when I get home and then recite the mileage. I'm nicer to my actual mechanic. Once they know 'that lady out there' knows the score, they worry that I might inspect their work more closely then most.
