Went for an oil change and the guy signing me in asked if I wanted new wiper blades or air filter, said no on wiper
blades and "let me see the air filter before you change it". Half hour later here he comes with my air filter in hand
telling me it's real dirty, so I pull my small flashlight out of my pocket and shine it through the filter, hell it was
almost brand new yet, looked at the guy and asked "Would you throw this away if it was in your car?"
He walked away with his tail between his legs.
That's how we always checked them in my father's service station, back then we used a trouble light with a 100
watt bulb, lot more powerful than my little flashlight.

(22,127 posts)the air filter was needing changed because they always do every time, that's when I grabbed the flashlight.
Everybody should do this, especially ladies.

(98,969 posts)I take the filter, look it over, bend over and tap it on the ground, maybe some dirt comes out but not much, hand it back and say, I'll blow it out with my air hose when I get home and then recite the mileage. I'm nicer to my actual mechanic. Once they know 'that lady out there' knows the score, they worry that I might inspect their work more closely then most.

(4,147 posts)And put it on that air filter housing. I have never had a person try to tell me it needed to be replaced.
Disclaimer: I was a mechanic and service manager in auto repair shops and dealerships.
Most dealers and shops are honest, key word "most".

(8,819 posts)as the internet. Anyway, they asked about the wipers, which were fine, showed that my filter was clean, asked but never pressured about added product or service, was as cheap as wal and was quick. Thanks for the warning though because they are the cheapest place to buy a battery and that is next on my winter prep list. I was going to have them install it but will just pick one up and do it myself. Only involves a second trip to exchange the old battery for the core charge rebate.

(642 posts)They did, however, put the wrong type of oil in my car. They were more than a little upset, when I said I wouldn't except the car until they changed the oil again. For God's sake, the oil cap itself had clear white text on it, showing what type of oil was needed for the car! 😡🙄

(7,416 posts)Besides, no one touches my cars other than me, and lifting the bonnet to gaze at the engine is MY job, no one else.
DIY has been ok with me for decades.
Yes, it's cheaper that way, but that is not why I do it.
The upsells still a thing?
I guess that is the only way they can make any money.

Anyways, I have K & N permanent air filter and cabin filters -- about a year old. So the "technician" reports that I need a new cabin air filter. Then the sweetheart behind the counter says that Carl also recommends a replacement ..... and servicing ...... and a couple of other things.
My response, Carl also recommended that I replace a K & N permanent cabin filter. I can't say that Carl inspires confidence in his ability to recognize car problems.

(28,312 posts)Unless it is literally the only place to go within 50 or more miles, shop elsewhere.
Plus, they are almost NEVER the cheapest choice, but no one understands the concept of "price shopping" these days.
