I had some coworkers who signed up for and were accepted in a special training program that my agency had for those interested in going into SES positions. I think they ended up spending a year, both in actual training courses and on high level details, in order to get a feel for the GS-1000 positions. Once completed, they now had a resume and experience to be considered for positions like "Regional Director" or "Deputy" Office Director, etc., but their background was originally as a civil service grunt! In many cases, it required them to move down to the D.C. metro area if they snagged one of those positions.

And then there were...ahem... the others.
