and while he sounds pretty unsophisticated, he doesn't sound really stupid.
He's just like so many other people who voted for the Orange Horror, he just heard what he wanted to hear and didn't think beyond it. He heard cutting government spending and though it meant cutting down on things like office supplies and had no idea they were going to gut entire departments of our government, usually the departments that helped the people instead of the rich.
He heard "sending illegals home" and thoght it would be limited to those annoying punks hanging ott at convenience stores, not realizing ICE would be turned into the Gestapo and raid everything from restaurants to schools, splitting families up and leaving unattended kids crying in the street after a parent had been kidnapped. He had no idea grad students here on legal visas and doing cancer research at universities would have their visas canceled for no reason, leaving the research undone.
He heard "tariffs" and thought countries like China that had made off with entire industries would be made to pay their fair share at long last and only belatedly found out a tariff was a tax on imported goods and we the people would be stuck paying it. Oh, and he realizes Fatso pulled all the numbers out of his ass. "Juvenile" was the word he used and he's right.
He just didn't realize any of this because he had no clue the GOP would allow this much of a jerk to represent the party in a presidential election. He trusted them to do better. He heard what he wanted to hear. He dudn't look beyond it. One thing he didn't say he wanted was to own the libbies or anyone else, so he was hoodwinked, not malicious.
Unlike those motivated by malice toward their neighbors, he will likely ask some questions , although probably not quite as bald as "Do you support throwing people out of work to pay for tax cuts for billionaires?" Maybe in the future he will, but he's not there yet.
