I think they really wanted to know if the election could be postponed. At the time of those discussions, Kerry was ahead and they may have been looking for a way to postpone the election until the trend could be reversed, using "terrorism" as an excuse. It would be a huge advantage for an incumbent president to be able to set the election date.
