SAN JOSE, Calif.—At least eight people were killed in a mass shooting at a light-rail facility in this Bay Area city’s downtown Wednesday morning, according to local law enforcement.

The shooter also died. He and at least some of the dead were employees of the Valley Transportation Authority, which runs the facility, said Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Russell Davis.

One victim was in critical condition at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, according to a spokeswoman for the hospital.

A bomb squad is on scene searching for explosive devices in the building where the shooting occurred, Mr. Davis said.
