and the other gentleman in the picture, a fellow Freedom Rider, got off the bus and were beaten by several people in a mob waiting in the station. One of the assailants that day had a change of heart many years later and contacted Lewis to express his remorse and shame and to seek forgiveness. They met in person and had a moving moment of reconciliation. Btw, the incident in the picture occurred right after the murders of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner, and the danger Lewis placed himself in was staggering. He did it anyway.
