Obama made a similar gaffe in 2008 (clinging to God and guns) but it didn't hurt him much. At the end of the day, many people who might have taken offense saw an upside in going with someone new and promising and were willing to give him a pass whereas with Hillary the same type of voter had already had a negative view of her candidacy and it hurt her. She needed to walk a finer line.
