Teenagers behind biggest measles outbreak in 18 years
Teenagers who were not vaccinated with MMR a decade or so ago due to the controversy, are behind an 18-year high in the number of measles cases, say health experts.
There were 2,016 confirmed cases in England and Wales in 2012 - the highest annual total since 1994 - according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Two outbreak zones comprise most of the cases - one on Merseyside and the other in Surrey and Sussex, said a spokesman. There have also been many cases among gipsies.
Vaccination rates for the triple-jab dropped sharply following now discredited claims by Dr Andrew Wakefield in 1998 that it could trigger autism. Rates took over a decade to recover.
