as well as in parts of northern Russia. The Sami speak a Finno-Ugric language, as do Finns and Estonians. This language is unrelated to Norwegian or Swedish, which belong to the Indo-European language family.

The name by which they were called previously, Lapps, was a derogatory term meaning rags in Finnish and Estonian. It referred to their clothing.
