1. How many cycles of enlightenment and dark ages have existed in human civilization?

Thanks for this thoughtful post, NNadir.

I am just a casual observer of history and science, but I have been struck by the number of times I have read about a particular period in some society's history where there was a blossoming of knowledge followed by a period of darkness. Cultures across the planet seem to have had this occur - perhaps because of outbreaks of disease/pandemics, religious zealotry and power consolidation, maybe collapse due to less than critical mass, perhaps some combination of these.

We may be in an era in the US where all of these are in play - the grabbing of power under the guise of religion and the disabling of sciences that might counter new pandemics. This leading to a shrinking population and the decrease in desire to start families in this environment.
