He's tried to swing the Catholic Church to the political center (even center-left!), something that's made a lot of the curia and the donor class very uncomfortable - especially after 35 years of the Opus Dei-coddling papacies of John Paul II and Benedict.

And those efforts - plus health problems - have clearly taken their toll on Francis.
