In warhammer there were 3 "pairings" with three zones in each pairing and fighting would be spread out across them taking objectives and capturing keeps. Locking down a zone would open up a fortress for attack which in turn opened up the enemies City and King for attack. GW2 did not add such dynamic aspects to the maps and went the static route..

The biggest problem is also the lack of guild queues so people can get in and play together, but that is small stuff and can be fixed easily. Half my guildies are aussies though and they found PvP unplayable due to the lag.

I love the aspect of three realms and the balance that helps to bring I just find the maps lackluster.
