I went to Peru last winter for vacation and it wasn't easy for us to adapt after we arrived in Cusco after being in Lima. (The areas we were in were from 8,000' to 12,000' above sea level). Most of us - myself included - had mild issues but there were a few people who struggled with the high altitude. One guy who was younger than me needed oxygen and a young woman on the trip was really under the weather the first night in the higher altitude.
