When Bart Starr scored the winning touchdown in the ice bowl, the play called was Brown Right 53 Wedge. The play was designed to go to the fullback, who was lined up directly behind the QB, but the footing was so bad that Starr kept the ball and just shuffled his feet to fall into the end zone as Jerry Kramer and Ken Bowman wedged Cowboy Jethro Pugh.

Fullback, Chuck Mercein, thought he was to get the ball. He was running toward the line when he saw Starr fall into the end zone. Because of the footing he couldn’t pull up, and to show the officials he wasn’t assisting Starr, he threw up both hands. Fans thought he was signaling a touchdown, but that wasn’t the case.
