Peering through the crack
Out through the stony wall
A single eye peeking through the gloom
Watching for danger
In the blackened night
Streets empty, nothing moves
But paper blown by sudden breezes
Passing by the alerted eye
Fear in the heart
Of the observer
As he waits for the knocking to come
By the invaders
Those who want to destroy him
For being
For breathing
For living
Far off in the distance
The sound of heels on pavement
Growing synchronous marching
Sounds of unity ever louder
Approaching
Will they come here?
He wonders as his heart flutters
About to leap from his chest
Suddenly, the pounding stops
Outside his wall of safety
Now safe no more
As the knocking begins
Then a hammering
Beating down the door
In they pour
The agents of destruction
Nowhere now to hide
He is snatched, dragged, beaten
Tied at the wrists and gagged
Thrown on the ground
As the enemies search for more
In the rooms nearby
Screams of distraught mothers
Children crying in the darkened night
--
Inhuman hearts darker than the night
Who would do this to human beings?
As the harvest vanishes into the fog
Never to be seen again
As the numbers build
And the quotas are met
What will be left
But the evil and destruction?
Nowhere to hide from them.
