1. I remember asking my mother, an inflexible Goldwater Republican who she favored for

President in early 1972 and was stunned and left completely speechless when she answered she wasn't sure but at that early point of the campaign she thought Shirley Chisholm made the most sense.

She was a fairly obscure candidate and I didn't think my mother even knew who she was.

I didn't want this one rare moment of political commonality to be undermined and left her response rest without further questioning.

She was a national treasure.
