(11,589 posts)All parties represented in Provincial States of Limburg, with the exception of the BBB, the PVV, Forum for Democracy and Oos Limburg, want to have quickly investigated whether whether or not temporarily a memorial can be built for black American liberators. The eleven parties ask Deputy States (GS) to look at the possibilities with the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten.
They give this assignment in state questions in response to a publication by NRC. In the permanent exhibition in the visitor center at the cemetery, two panels have disappeared that explain the contribution of African-American soldiers. According to a spokesman for the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) in Paris, it is about "roling". Kees Ribbens, senior researcher at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies and special professor of popular historical culture of global conflicts and massive violence at Erasmus University Rotterdam, believes that the removal of the memorial plaques fits with the approach of the Trump administration, aimed at against diversity and inclusion policies.
'Indecent' and 'unacceptable'
The eleven parties who ask the questions to GS "are shocked by the reporting". According to them, the removal does no justice to history and is in their eyes "indecent" and "unacceptable". PvdA, VVD, GroenLinks, the party for the Animals, D66, Lokaal-Limburg, SP, CDA, Horizon, 50PLUS and JA21 also want to know if GS can do something to promote the replacement of the panels.
