I'm not a believer, but I was raised one. I see the hope, peace, joy and comfort it brings to some... but I also see how evil it can be when it's wielded as a cudgel to manipulate, terrorize and control others.

I remember when President Carter left the Southern Baptists in 2000 due to the denomination's increasingly rigid doctrines and a growing social and political conservatism. He said that this contradicted his core beliefs on equality for women, the separation of church and state, and racial issues.

He publicly announced his departure because the Southern Baptists had adopted a new creed that he viewed as rigid and exclusionary, particularly regarding women's roles in the church and its stances on other social issues. In particular, their condemnation of homosexuality and other social issues.
