1. Willing themselves to live for the Day they made happen (as did many brave true patriots back then).

Jefferson and Adams are truly the stuff of legends: 50 years to the Day. Coming after uniting in 1776, becoming bitter rivals, and then ending up as pen-pals.

Perhaps Monroe had similar feelings about the meaning of the Day and willed himself too.
