        wanted to continue their profligate consumption, no matter the cost, and even if they agreed with Carter regarding the philosophical/spiritual aspect of the problem. Sure, one may have voted for Carter, but one wasn't likely to change one's ways, as it were. Virtually no one wanted to hear about conservation and finding meaning and purpose in one's life beyond consumption, even if one agreed on a fundamental level. It could be argued that this is the ultimate paradox of modern human existence.
