1. The cruelty really is the point, isn't it?

I'm not always sure that's the case with every single thing he does. I think his utter indifference to the needs and desires of anyone besides himself often leads to a lot of collateral damage that he is completely unconcerned about. But in this case, a specific marginalized group is being pointedly targeted in a way that feels downright creepy to me.

I suspect Stephen Miller is behind this. Trump has never really seemed to care that much about LGBTQ issues, one way or another, but Miller has said terrible things about trans people that indicate a deep, personal animus toward them, imo. (Content warning on that link: it's highly rage inducing, proceed at your own risk.)

In a way, it may not seem to matter who came up with this. It's horrible and wrong no matter whose diseased brain it originally emanated from. But I just can't help but see Miller's nasty little fingerprints all over this.
