If you can't call this government what it is – Kahanist, extremist, eager to burn down what remains of the state – you're not standing with Israel. You're standing in the way of any chance it has left to change.

Israel's Ugly Kahanist Face Steps Onto the World Stage

Haaretz Editorial
Feb 5, 2024

Kahanism's spread in Israel is no longer any secret. Israel's ugly Kahanist face was on display this week in the pages of the Wall Street Journal, which published an article about National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that included an interview with him.

Ben-Gvir used this respected platform to threaten Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "Netanyahu is at a crossroads," Ben-Gvir warned, and must now "choose in what direction he'll go." He added that he himself would probably oppose any deal that led to the release of thousands of terrorists or the end of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Ben-Gvir thereby exemplified the mutually exploitative relationship that helps both him and Netanyahu to survive politically. Ben-Gvir has hitched a ride on Netanyahu's lack of other political options, while Netanyahu uses Ben-Gvir as a counterweight to diplomatic pressure on Israel.

It's true that without Ben-Gvir, Netanyahu wouldn't have a government, since there isn't a single person in Israel's political system who believes so much as a word he says. But it's also true that thanks to Ben-Gvir, Netanyahu can continue his policy of claiming "my hands are tied" in the face of American demands that he move forward on a two-state solution, and more generally in any discussion of the postwar situation.

Yet Ben-Gvir didn't make do with flexing his muscles in the domestic arena. He also decided to provoke U.S. President Joe Biden and fawn over Donald Trump. This was apparently out of a hope that Trump would win the next U.S. presidential election and a belief that Trump would give Israel a green light to move forward with the criminal transfer plan that Ben-Gvir and his colleagues on the far right are advocating. "Instead of giving us his full backing, Biden is busy with giving humanitarian aid and fuel, which goes to Hamas," Ben-Gvir claimed. "If Trump was in power, the U.S. conduct would be completely different."

These statements endanger Israel's relations with America. Thus a prime minister whose chief concern was the welfare of the country would have ousted Ben-Gvir and all his fellow supporters of the transfer and annexation program from his government. But then, a prime minister who was guided by the country's interests would never have appointed someone like this as a minister in the first place or maintained any kind of political partnership with him.

Netanyahu, however, managed to produce a response that said nothing and promised nothing. It didn't even mention Ben-Gvir by name, lest his base, heaven forbid, turn against him. Ben-Gvir and Netanyahu, both separately and together, are a danger to Israel's future. A society that wants to survive must demand their ouster from public life. If they remain in power, Israel will continue deteriorating and its international standing will be destroyed.
