WMATA will be slowing its above-ground trains due to the extreme heat. … In a release, WMATA said rail temperatures are measuring in at 135 degrees and can cause problems for the rail lines.

As such, WMATA is reducing ths peed of above-ground trains to 35 mph.

“Due to rail temperatures above 135 degrees, as of 2 p.m., there is an above-ground speed restriction of 35 mph in effect systemwide,” WMATA said in a release. “We will provide an update when rail temperatures return to normal.”

The region is expected to see 100-degree weather this weekend and that heat wave could continue through the fourth of July weekend.
