. Shelly, who enjoys painting animals, is inspired by myths and folklore. For Oklahoma she drew on Native American designs from baskets and pottery, along with its state animal, the bison, and leaves from the Survivor Tree that endured the Oklahoma City bombing. Lightening symbols are on its legs, as were painted on Indian war horses so they would run fast, she said.

Shelley used acrylic paint that the project gave her but also supplemented with her own paint, including gold for highlights and the donkeys’ hooves.
