A colorful herd of 57 painted donkeys in a Philadelphia warehouse awaits its debut. The fiberglass donkeys, each painted by an artist, will be scattered around the city in time form the Democratic National Convention in July.
Ed Rendell, the former governor and Philadelphia mayor, who is Philadelphia Host Committee chairman, came up with the idea. Rendell, who was on hand for the donkeys unveiling to the press on Thursday, explained that delegates from the 50 states, six territories and Washington D.C. suggested symbols from their areas and also signed off on the artists final designs.
Were really excited, said Rendell. The city is ready for the convention with transportation, lodging and security in place. I think well have a great convention, he said. Were optimistic. Its a great opportunity for the city to shine.
Rendell was pleased that even the Union League, the bastion of Republican heritage in this town, agreed to take a Democratic donkey.
Love this ......so cool the love of art....at the Democratic Convention.....
