and darning thread which I inherited from great-aunts. It's very soft six-ply cotton and does a great job--the darn turns out flat and closely woven, lasts forever. If I didn't have proper darning thread I'd use embroidery thread.

Happy darning--one of the most satisfactory household arts I know of.

PS I should clarify that I'm talking about darning socks, not woven fabrics.
