8. Even with the new latex foam and others...

I've read that almost all mattresses last only 7 years. About 4 months ago I read lots of reviews on memory foam toppers for mattresses and I believe the Serta was the highest rated. So I bought a 3" one and put it on my mattress. However, I also had read that if your mattress already has an indentation in it, a memory foam topper will only conform to the indentation and not help that much. This seems to be the case with mine.

I noticed my lower back is sore more often, but at almost 68 years old I wonder if it's not all due to the mattress. I do think any new mattress would help at least until it gets broken in. I've had recurring lower back pain most of my life and a herniated disc once. It would probably help if I got back into basic yoga but in almost every other type of exercise I am very self-disciplined but could never get into a yoga routine at home.

My main probably is that I'm very frugal and I am of a generation that remembers a time when things were better quality and lasted longer. I know that's a generalization because there are definitely some things that are better nowadays, but I don't think people had to buy new mattresses every 6 or 7 years back then. Or maybe they just suffered I do remember my father putting a piece of plywood on top of the box spring in my parents' bed. Ironically, in reading the reviews on foam mattresses several reviewers said they put a sheet of plywood under theirs too!
