is that papers which are normally rabid Tory cheerleaders, like the Express and Mail, and the Telegraph, which Boris Johnson referred to as his "boss" during his time as prime minister, have apparently seen the writing on the wall and the fact that the situation is unspinnable.

I wouldn't say we have such a superior press in the UK - we have some good journalists, but US papers can do some great investigative journalism, not confined to the majors in the biggest cities. If I'd posted one of these front page roundups during the more hysterical throes of Brexit, I don't think you'd be so ready to admire them.

You cannot hope to bribe or twist
(thank God!) the British journalist.
But, seeing what the man will do
unbribed, there’s no occasion to.
