Queen Elizabeths British subjects may have long ago accepted that affairs, cohabitation and divorce are features of modern relationships, but the queen is still very much a Church of England traditionalist when it comes to the relationships shell recognize in official settings.
Thats the likely reason that Boris Johnsons girlfriend Carrie Symonds was noticeably absent when Elizabeth invited the new prime minister to Buckingham Palace Wednesday to formally ask him to form a government, the Daily Beast reported Friday.
Its been a longstanding practice for the partners of new prime ministers to accompany them to the palace to meet the queen, the Daily Beast said. But over the decades, that practice has applied to prime ministers wives and husbands.
The 31-year-old Symonds is just a girlfriend, while the 55-year-old Johnson technically still has a wife: Marina Wheeler. She is his second wife, and they had four children together during 25 years of marriage, CNN reported.
