Nebraska man has seen every best picture nominee ever 546 Oscar-nominated movies except 1 [View all]

PAPILLION, Neb. — Since the first Academy Awards in 1929, there have been 546 films nominated for best picture, and Vernon Waldren has seen all but one.

The only best picture nominee missing from Waldren’s list? “The Patriot.”

“Not the Mel Gibson movie,” said the 65-year-old. “It’s from 1928. It’s a silent movie about a Russian czar. I haven’t seen it because it is totally lost. There’s a portion of it in Portugal, but yeah, it’s gone, and I’m guessing it truly is gone.”

“The Patriot” is the only best picture nominee that no longer exists, meaning that Waldren’s effort to see all the films nominated for the award might never be complete. (Unless someone discovers an intact version of “The Patriot” in a storage locker or something.)

But still ... 545 out of 546 ain’t bad.
