Some relief from the extremism of absurd medical bills - Governor Whitmer announces $144 million in medical debt relief [View all]

DETROIT, Mich. (WILX) - On Thursday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a partnership with the nonprofit organization, Undue Medical Debt.

Undue Medical Debt purchases qualifying medical debt in bulk “for pennies” from providers like hospitals and collection agencies.

In order to qualify, people must earn four times or below the federal poverty level, or have medical debt that is five percent or more of their annual income.

The Governor announced this would be the “first round of medical debt forgiveness” and would help 210,000 Michigan residents save more than $144 million.
