8. My mother-in-law was the queen of rationalization.

At another dinner she apologized for the corn as we sat down. She said she had overcooked it. She kept apologizing until she tried it. “That’s not as terrible as I thought it would be.”

Another bite. “That’s really not awful.”

Another bite. “That’s not bad at all.”

Another bite. “That’s GOOD corn. Try the corn. It’s GOOD corn. That corn is GOOD! That’s GOOD corn! GOOD CORN!”
