15. The redistricting was not a completely bad thing...

To be clear, I am against the gerrymandering, and glad it has been possibly put on hold. That being said…

The Texas Republican leadership is not dumb. Selfish and corrupt, yes. Dumb, no. So the question is… If the gerrymander was such a slam dunk idea, why didn’t they do it after the last census?

The reason: dilution. In general, if a party has a +14 advantage in a district, it’s a lock. The state already is as gerrymandered as it can be and still maintain an almost unbeatable advantage.

Further rigging the districts would bring their advantage down to “only” 6-8 points. Still an advantage, but not a sure thing. We might have picked up some seats…

Still, allowing it to happen would be a bad precedent. Hopefully the courts continue to rule correctly.
