By any chance is there something this friend may want from you?

I tend to be wary of narcissists, they tend to be opportunists and transactional.

But sometimes people go through a dark time and get self absorbed.
Then when they are in a better place can start interacting more normally with others.

Well maybe society will learn some lessons about criminals and psychopaths.
Not really a good way to run a country or your life.
