6. I got a Scholastic book called "Runaway Slave: The Story of Harriet Tubman"

in 1966, one year after the Civil War Centennial ended. It made me hate my former slave state of Arkansas, even though it hadn't been a slave state in 100+ years. Arkansas finally came to terms with its past in the late '60s, and the state's Democratic Party began to distance itself from that in the '70s with New Democrats such as Dale Bumpers, David Pryor, and even Bill Clinton.
