Almost 50,000 Afrikaners have made inquiries about gaining asylum in America under President Trumps refugee programme, the US State Department has said.

After taking office Trump indefinitely suspended Americas refugee resettlement programme, under which about 60,000 people entered the US in 2023, but made an exception for white South Africans. The president and his allies have repeated conspiracy theories there has been a white genocide of Afrikaners in South Africa.
They have also claimed white farmers were having their land seized under a new government policy, but no land has been expropriated and white South Africans who make up 7.3 per cent of the population still own 73 per cent of commercial farmland.
John Steenhuisen, South Africas white agricultural minister, and others have questioned whether real white farmers are going to the US or merely those who have been unsuccessful.
