residents of the nation’s largest metropolitan centers are less likely to list crime and gun violence among the chief concerns facing their communities than they were a couple years ago.

It's Suburbanites, Exurbanites, and Rustics that fear urban crime. They see mayhem highlighted on their local news and think it's 10x worse than reality.

I hear it all the time: "Oh, I never go into Seattle, it's so dangerous now". It's not, but fine, stay out.
