"Disco icon" is right for Gaynor, and yeah, if you don't know disco music, then you have to look up who the top artists were. The explanation is "disco icon". I had no idea who George Strait is, because I don't know country music. I don't think that means a discussion of his politics must start with a discography for those of us who aren't fans.
