Epstein case: Speaker Mike Johnson said he would shut down the House until September in order to head off Democratic demands for votes calling for the release of files from the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and sex offender who was once friends with President Trump. Mr. Johnson said votes would end Wednesday night in what he called an effort to avoid “political games” related to the Justice Department’s handling of the files. The announcement came just after the House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime partner of Mr. Epstein, for a deposition.
