In an age of unbelievable wealth inequality, there seems to be competition over who can be most privileged, dominant, on top. It blinds them to any considerations for the common good.

I believe right now they are running out of places to invest/increase their wealth. Too much money chasing fewer and fewer exploitable opportunities. The housing market is saturated, the stock market is perhaps topped out for the short-term, they are competing to throw money at AI and buy out companies.

The next trophy investment is governments and global infrastructure, such as monetary systems. This is where their greed has the potential to easily destroy the world.

The top elites gain more status and power, while they destroy everything around them. There are no natural controls that I can see to curb their desires. It is a global problem that grows worse by the day as more people join the oligarch class.
