They can't continue supporting him without losing, so they are jumping on the band wagon to take him down via his past sins. They can't win future elections with him, but this gives them the perfect excuse to say they supported him until all hell broke loose and were shocked like everyone else.

The economic policies, social agenda, etc. will be quietly swept under the rug under the guise of a sin. That's all they can do to save their own ass.
