It strikes me as curious, sometimes. In traditional Iroquois society, the adults and elders kept a close eye on children and youth. They recognized, for example, certain leadership qualities that would allow a clan mother to pick who would be their representative on the Council of Chiefs and Grand Council of Chiefs. They identified those who thought for themselves, and acted for others. And the clan mother could "de-horn" -- or remove -- a chief for misbehavior. I've witnessed that.

In our society, bad people among us identify young people with the potential to become bad. Various types of organized crime are based upon this exercise, to make more money to leaders. Some of their behaviors are "legal," such as serving on foundations boards of directors that tend to have quite a bit of influence on society. Some of their behaviors are illegal and evil. It never works out well when a group of them take over the federal government, in my opinion.
