What just happened in Hungary and what does it mean for us?
Amanda's Mild Takes
I talked to Tom Carothers of the Carnegie Institute’s Democracy, Conflict, and Governance program — who also happens to live part-time in Hungary, and has been there for the last two months watching this election unfold. I asked him:

Who is Orban, where did he come from, and how did he amass so much power?

Who’s the new guy??

How did Hungary pull this off?

What are the implications for pro-democracy forces in Europe?

Implications for Ukraine specifically?

What was the fallout of the JD Vance visit?

What can Americans take from this?

that are informative and infuriating, like the way Hungary had the best train system in eastern Europe and how it's been allowed to fall into a shining example of neglect, including one line that features an 8 km hike from where the tracks just stup down the right of way to the next station.

Meanwhile, Orban was living large, vacationing in the most expensive villa in Vietnam, accumulating mansions and fancy foreign cars, the usual for right wing autocrats.

What I'll be watching for is a constitutional reset using Orban's stolen powers to accomplish it, followed by an amendment that makes amending the constitution (which was a good one) much more difficult, requiring 67-75% of the popular vote.

.Unfortunately, Orban's nasty policies toward the rest of Europe will live on until and unless Slovakia ousts that nasty little shit Robert Fico.
